Toyota to build fifth engine plant in Japan
Toyota has announced that it will soon be opening the doors to its fifth engine plant in Japan. Toyota will invest $505.1 million in the new plant, which should be online by 2011. Toyota has yet to announce exactly which engine it will produce at the new plant — which will be built in Sendai, Japan — but it is believed that the automaker will use the plant to produce a new four-cylinder engine.
According to Automotive News, the new plant will initially produce about 200,000 engines per year, with that number eventually being ramped up to 400,000 units annually. Analysts expect the plant to employ 500 workers.
Once built, the latest plant will bring Toyota’s worldwide engine plant count to 17.
The new plant is part of Toyota’s aggressive growth strategy, which also includes selling 10.4 million vehicles in 2009.
