Mad 200bhp Aygo for British Motor Show
The mad, mid-engined supermini was a trend kicked off by cars like the bonkers Renault 5 Maxi Turbo back in the early 80s.

Then came the Group B rally monsters like the Peugeot 205 GTI T16 and Metro 6R4, Renault even making a production mid-engined Clio.

Nissan then got in on the act, subverting the Micra’s otherwise granny-friendly image by slinging a 350Z 3.5-litre V6 where the back seat used to be for a one-off showstopping special. And now Toyota has done the same, corrupting the cute little Aygo into a mid-engined, turbocharged rear-wheel drive special.
Appropriately enough called the Aygo Crazy, this 200bhp pocket rocket will go on show at the British International Motor Show next month. Sadly this doesn’t signal a new direction for Toyota, this being a one-off special intended to inject a bit of sparkle into the firm’s otherwise dull but worthy reputation.
Using a turbocharged version of the 1.8-litre VVT-i engine used in the Celica and MR2 – not to mention various Lotus Elise and Exige variants – the Aygo Crazy slashes the standard Aygo’s 14.2-second 0-62mph sprint to just 5.75 seconds, maxing out at 127mph. Weighing just 1050kg and running on trick Tein suspension it’s bound to be pretty nimble too.
With no power steering, ABS or traction control it’s a hardcore little beastie too, the interior boasting a suitably racy roll cage, bucket seats and full harnesses. This theme continues to the running gear, which includes four-pot Brembo brakes. For a closer look be sure to drop by Toyota’s stand at the British International Motor Show.
