Official: 85mpg Smart diesel for UK
There aren’t many car makers able to find anything positive amid spiralling oil costs and ever more stringent CO2 regulations.
But Smart must be jumping for joy and is taking the opportunity to make its diesel powered ForTwo available to UK drivers for the first time.

Emitting just 88g/km of CO2, the ForTwo CDI is, claims Smart, the lowest polluting car in the world. And on the official combined mpg cycle it has recorded an astounding figure of 85.9mpg – good enough for a near 700-mile range on its 38-litre fuel tank. Which is as close to cheap motoring as you’ll get these days.
There have been diesel Smarts since 2004 but they haven’t been offered in right-hand drive form before. The hybrid-beating emissions and fuel consumption, not to mention free road tax thanks to its sub-99g/km emissions, now make it a viable addition to the model line up and the first cars will be here in February.
Powered by a 799cc three-cylinder motor, the fortwo CDI has just 44bhp but will top 83mph … eventually. Smart doesn’t actually publish a 0-62mph time, but given that the petrol powered 60bhp version takes over 16 seconds the best advice is don’t hold your breath. Or expect to be overtaking much.
Still, it will be about the greenest thing on four wheels and all that money saved on fuel and road tax can be put to good use. You get all the mod cons you could need too, with a five-speed automated gearbox, head/thorax airbags and the second-generation car’s expanded cabin and boot space too.
