Ontario’s minister of economic development has asked Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne to consider building Alfa Romeos in Canada. She stated that before the economic crisis, Canadian consumers wanted large cars but that’s since changed: consumers are now after small and medium-sized cars, the type of cars that Fiat is specialized in. Fiat’s CEO has not commented on the offer one way or another. 2.2 million cars were produced in Ontario in 2010. If Fiat takes the Canadian government up on their offer they’d benefit from tax benefits and from Canada’s proximity to the US, making it easier to import cars.
